Finishing metal AM parts
Inconel 718 / Ti-6-4

Removing support marks and bringing the surface to tolerance

Parts printed by SLM/DMLS leave the machine with as-printed roughness, which does not meet assembly, sealing or aerodynamic requirements. Finish grinding after support removal is not an option but a mandatory step of the route.

Problem and solution

What blocks progress

  • Support marks and stair-stepping on surfaces visible at assembly and at seals.
  • Heat-resistant nickel alloys and titanium: conventional abrasives dull quickly, removal rate drops, tool consumption grows.
  • Complex geometry, internal channels and sloped surfaces — hard to reach with a tool.
  • Roughness is specified on the drawing, but the finishing route is not defined.

What we do

  • Select the fraction by material and target roughness — in three stages: roughing, finishing, polishing.
  • Supply pastes and concentrates diluted to your specific process, plus ready suspensions for machine lapping.
  • Match with carriers: felt, polishing wheels, abrasive-fibre brushes, elastic abrasives.
  • Parameters (speed, feed, pressure) are matched to your machine and tooling — from your data, not from a “universal” table.

Indicative fraction ranges

The ranges below are starting points for selection, not a ready-made process. The final fraction depends on initial roughness, allowance, tooling and drawing requirements — confirmed on a sample.

Two stages in practice

The route is normally built from two stages rather than one: first the fraction that confidently removes support marks and restores form, then a finer one that works on the prepared surface and delivers the required roughness. Going straight to the fine fraction over support marks increases cycle time and risks burnishing defects instead of removing them.

How to start

  1. Send: material, printing method, initial and target roughness, batch volume.
  2. Receive a fraction and carrier recommendation in writing, justified for your material.
  3. Validate on a trial batch from 1 kg — the minimum order.
  4. Serial supply with incoming inspection of every batch and particle-size confirmation.

We are not a manufacturer: we work as a supply integrator through qualified partner factories, with our own incoming inspection and warehousing. That is why a batch can be assembled from several production sites for a single task.
